REGENCY DINNER

Thursday 29 January 2004

City College, Pelham Street, main entrance

A glittering, (and merry) occasion for the winter season. Final year students on the acclaimed catering course at City College present a Regency Dinner, which they have researched, ‘designed’ and prepared specially for the Society under the expert guidance of Michael Buckman.

Michael is the Programme Manager for Hospitality and Catering at City College. Students at the college have assisted leading chefs in the city, cooking for important banquets, including the Prince of Wales’ luncheon in the Royal Pavilion. Former students have become major restaurateurs in Brighton, London and beyond.

The Evening commences with a Reception. At the Dinner there will be a surprise guest speaker.

Platter of buttered crab, potted mushrooms and pheasant pate

Taste of soups: Palestine Soup and Pease Pottage

Duo of Fish
Grilled mackerel with fennel and mint and herring in mustard butter

Orange sorbet

Spiced beef in red wine jus

Roast pheasant in celery sauce

Following the great success of previous years, Yvonne Dale has made her 'secret garden' available to the Society again this year on Sunday, June 27. 6pm–8pm

SUMMER STUDY TRIP – PIERS & TOWERS

A day trip to London by coach, devised and led by Professor David Robson, to see some buildings designed by Piers Gough and some tower buildings of the 20th and 21st centuries.
Sunday, 20 June 2004 – 8.30am to 8.00pm
Cost: £18.50, excluding meals (please bring packed lunch)
Travel: By coach – 8.30am from Palmeira Square (north side); 8.40am from York House (north side) Old Steine; 8.45am from Preston Circus, north side London Road. Back in Brighton c8.00pm.

SUMMER STUDY TRIP - ST. HUGH'S MONASTERY

Professor David Robson will lead the visit and make comparisons with other Carthusian monasteries in Europe. The buildings are on the west side of the road between Henfield and Cowfold and are about one mile south of Cowfold.

Crouch Hill, Parkminster, West Sussex
Saturday, 3 July 2004 – 11am to lunchtime
Cost: £5 donation to the monastery
Travel: By members’ cars – parking is available
PLEASE NOTE: Under Carthusian monastery rules, only men may be admitted

REGENCY SOCIETY STUDY TOUR OF EAST ANGLIA

Friday 4 – Wednesday 9 June 2004
This study tour is centred on Norwich, an ideal base for exploring the region. Accommodation is at the Maids Head Hotel, in the centre of the city,
opposite the Cathedral.

Friday 4 June
Participants meet for dinner in hotel.

Saturday 5 June
An architectural guided walking tour of Norwich.
Coach to Sandringham for lunch and visit of house and gardens.

Sunday 6 June
Morning: visit to Blickling Hall, one of England’s great Jacobean houses, famous for its spectacular long gallery. Conducted tour before Hallopens to public.

Afternoon: optional visit to Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts or free time in Norwich. The Sainsbury Centre is a revolutionary building of the 1970s by Norman Foster with outstanding, eclectic collections.

Monday 7 June
Morning: visit to Ickworth House, Suffolk, one of the most unusual houses in East Anglia, built in 1795 by the eccentric Fourth Earl of Bristol to display his collections of paintings and magnificent Georgian silver. Conducted tour.

Afternoon: visit to Euston Hall. A fascinating house, with origins in the Middle Ages, its treasures include the famous collection of paintings of the Court of Charles II by Van Dyck and Lely and the celebrated “Mares and Foals” by Stubbs. The Duke is the Patron of our Society and it is his intention (health permitting) to welcome us on the day.

Tuesday 8 June
Morning: Guided tour of Holkham Hall, designed by William Kent, and home of the Earls of Leicester.

Afternoon: Guided tour of Cathedral and opportunity to attend Evensong.

Wednesday 9 June
Depart after breakfast.

Cost: Double room per person £356; single room £406

Includes: Dinner, bed and breakfast at hotel; transport by air conditioned coach; entrance fees (apart from Sainsbury Centre and National Trust properties for non-NT members).

Not included: Travel to and from Norwich, which should be arranged individually, gratuities to hotel staff, drinks, newspapers, lunches.

NB Most double rooms have double beds. Please indicate a.s.a.p. if you require twin beds.

A deposit of £50 per person is required no later than 21 January 2004.
